12th UN International Day of Cooperatives (1 July 2006)
"Peace-building through Co-operatives"
This year the theme of the International Day highlights how co-operative enterprises have and continue to foster peace among peoples, communities and nations by virtue of their values and principles and the implementation of these. Co-operatives not only play a role in helping to address problems which lead to conflict, but also offer a real alternative in helping to resolve conflict while also significantly contribute to rebuilding communities after wars or civil strife by creating conditions to lessen the resurgence of conflict.
