| To guide the farmers in entering the marketing and closely link the farmers of tens of thousands of households with the changing market to promote industrialization of agriculture if the historical mission of the supply and marketing cooperatives. In the last few years, the SMCs have been taking an active part in the industrialization of agriculture to enrich the farmers and to expand their own businesses. They have fostered a number of leading enterprises and formed strong economic alliance with the farming households via specialized cooperatives. By the end of 2005, the SMCs have brought up 412 leading enterprises of considerable economic scale, formed economic alliance with 18.71 million farming households and initiated 14,000 specialized cooperative with a total membership of 4.2 million farming households.
With specialized cooperative of various types specialized agricultural produce associations, wholesale markets, processing plants deals and information platforms, a well-fledged agricultural business chain come into being under the direction of the SMCs. The SMCs now represent a major driving force of agricultural industrialization in China.

Over years of experimentation, the SMCs have discovered a distinctive cooperative road to agricultural industrialization, i.e., forming an alliance of leading enterprises, specialized cooperatives and farming households to integrate the production, processing and marketing links and to generate more growth points for farmers to enrich themselves.
